Religious Freedom Institute (Washington, DC area)

The Religious Freedom Institute (RFI) is committed to achieving broad acceptance of religious liberty as a fundamental human right, the cornerstone of a successful society, and a source of national and international security. It will achieve this goal by convincing stakeholders in select regions that religious freedom can help them achieve their own goals—political, economic, strategic, and religious. Action Teams will establish a presence in each region to build coalitions and work toward making religious freedom a priority for governments, civil society, religious communities, businesses, and the general public. (

Job Description and Responsibilities

The Director of Development will:

•    Understand fully why religious freedom is essential to human dignity and the flourishing of human societies and cultures

•    Understand the importance of the mission of RFI and effectively communicate the importance and urgency of that mission in person and in writing

•    Develop a disciplined fundraising strategy, in consultation with RFI leadership team and chairman of the Board Development Committee. Implement the strategy, leveraging the RFI Board and Staff, to ensure that a minimum of $1.5 million is raised annually, but with a goal of doubling or tripling this amount within three years 

•    Implement a computerized system to track relationships, next steps, and communications with present or potential donors

•    Develop a plan to create an endowment for the RFI, and possess or acquire the expertise necessary to deal with stock gifts, wills, and other forms of planned giving

•    Network through current donors to locate new giving prospects who can make major gifts 

•    Utilize social media to connect with supporters and potential donors – large and small

•    Be able to write clearly and in a manner which moves the reader to act

•    Be a “people-person” – comfortable with donors, RFI staff, and the RFI Board

•    Be a “self-starter,” energetic, and passionate about raising the funds necessary for RFI to achieve its mission

Desired Experience and Background

•    Bachelor's degree 

•    Ideal candidate with have three or more years of development/fundraising or sales experience

•    Previous fundraising experience at another NGO highly desired, with demonstrated record of accomplishment

Working Environment / Conditions

Some domestic travel may be required, as well as some weekend and evening work to accommodate donor schedules and RFI special needs
One-year contract to be offered, with subsequent contracts dependent on performance


Negotiable based on experience, with raises and bonuses available based on overall performance, medical benefits and retirement included

Open to hiring from January 1, 2017.
