The Religious Freedom Institute (RFI) is dedicated to restoring religious freedom to its proper place in American society. Central to this work is shaping the public and private institutions that educate America’s youth and future leaders. Through a variety of programs and collaborative efforts, RFI endeavors to equip a new generation of emerging leaders to understand, appreciate, and defend religious freedom.

The Center for Religious Freedom Education (CRFE) is the main entity through which RFI accomplishes its ambitious goal of transforming current intellectual and cultural understandings of religious freedom in the United States. Among its many program areas, CRFE develops high school and university curricula, conducts training for schools and churches, sponsors academic colloquiums and conferences, facilitates internships and advanced student mentoring, funds dissertation fellowships, and provides publishing outlets and networking opportunities for young, untenured faculty across disciplines.

The American Charter of Freedom of Religion and Conscience is the result of a collaborative initiative between scholars, experts, and key representatives of diverse religious and nonreligious constituencies from across the political and ideological spectrum. It reaffirms and celebrates America’s remarkable and exceptionally robust commitment to freedom of religion and conscience for all people.

The goal of the American Charter is to advance a productive, respectful discussion and increase understanding of the meaning and value of freedom of religion and conscience in the midst of America’s extensive religious pluralism. As such, it will increasingly be incorporated into RFI’s educational efforts.
